The Michelin Guide Malta 2022 was released today. It has 31 restaurants in Malta and Gozo, including 5 Michelin-starred restaurants and 4 Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurants.
Michelin star
Each of the five restaurants that received one Michelin star in the 2021 guide will maintain their star status for another year. These are: Under Crops in Valletta; Noni in Valletta; ION - Port of Valletta; Demondion in Mdina; and Bahia in Barzan(previously located in Lija).
The latter moved from a community bar in Lija to a stylish new store inside the Corinthia Palace Hotel in Balzan. The talented kitchen offers three menus: 'Past' offers refined dishes inspired by different periods of Malta's history; 'Future' explores new and sometimes bold flavour combinations; and Seasonal à la carte gifts focus on local ingredients.
Michelin Bib Gourmand Recommendation
A restaurant was recently awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand for its quality and value-for-money food, bringing the total number of bibs in this year's guide to four. Valletta's Grain Street is from the same stables as the Michelin Starred Under Grain, offering great value platters for everyone to share.
This joins three other restaurants that have all retained their Bib Gourmand character: Terrone in Birgu; Ruby in Valletta; and Commando in Mellieha.
What's new in the guide
In addition to Grain Street, our inspectors found three other restaurants that deserve a spot in the guide. Marea in Kalkara is a cool, modern restaurant with a tiered terrace overlooking the Grand Harbour, serving a fusion of Mediterranean and Japanese cuisine. AKI in Valletta is a stylish basement restaurant with an Asian-inspired menu. By contrast, Rebekah's in Mellieħa is housed in a historic homestead and specialises in Mediterranean cuisine.
